Hajj and Umrah travel health

Saudi Arabia requires a MenACWY certificate for pilgrims, given at least ten days before arrival - we vaccinate and issue the certificate in the same appointment.

The requirement, and when to deal with it

Meningococcal ACWY vaccination is a condition of the Hajj and Umrah visa. The dose must be given not less than ten days before arrival in Saudi Arabia, and the certificate forms part of the visa application rather than something shown on landing.

Requirements are set each year by the Saudi Ministry of Health and are revised between seasons. We check the current position at your appointment rather than working from last year's rules, and we would rather see you two months out than two weeks out - the ten-day minimum leaves no room if anything goes wrong.

Why a pilgrimage is a public health event

Millions of people from almost every country on earth spend several days in close proximity, sharing air, accommodation and transport. That is the ideal condition for respiratory infection, which is why Saudi Arabia regulates entry health requirements as closely as it does.

The practical consequence for a pilgrim is that the vaccines worth discussing go beyond the mandatory one. Seasonal flu, and keeping your routine diphtheria, tetanus and polio cover current, both come up in nearly every Hajj consultation.

The rest of the checklist, which nobody tells you about

Heat is the hazard that actually sends pilgrims to the medical tents. Temperatures during Hajj can exceed forty degrees, and the rites involve hours of walking, often by people who are older or managing a long-term condition. Rehydration salts, a plan for taking regular medicines in a different time zone, and sun protection are worth as much thought as any injection.

Walking long distances in ihram causes blisters and chafing, and sandals plus heat plus crowds is a reliable combination. We put together the unglamorous side of the kit as well - blister dressings, barrier cream, rehydration sachets, a spare supply of your regular medication with a copy of the prescription.

  • MenACWY with certificate - a visa requirement
  • Seasonal flu vaccination, given the crowding
  • Diphtheria, tetanus and polio cover brought up to date
  • A plan for regular medicines across the time difference, with a copy of the prescription
  • Rehydration salts, sun protection and blister dressings
  • A face covering for crowded indoor spaces, if you want one

Certificates, replacements and groups

We issue the vaccination certificate at the appointment. If you were vaccinated previously and have lost the paperwork, we can issue a replacement from a record of the original dose - our price list shows the charge for that.

If you are organising a group through a mosque or a travel operator, call your nearest clinic and ask for the travel team. It is far easier to set aside a block of appointments than to have thirty people arrive separately in the last fortnight before departure.

Common questions

Hajj and Umrah questions

  • How early should I come in?

Six to eight weeks before departure is comfortable. The hard limit is that MenACWY must be at least ten days before arrival, but the certificate is part of the visa process, so leaving it to the ten-day minimum is cutting it fine.

  • I had MenACWY for a previous Umrah. Do I need another dose?

Cover lasts around five years, so possibly not. Bring the certificate or record - if it still stands we can often issue documentation from it rather than repeat the vaccine.

  • Can you vaccinate a group from our mosque?

Yes. Ring your nearest clinic and ask about a group booking, and we will set aside a block rather than fitting people in one at a time.

  • Meningitis ACWY

One injection, with the certificate Saudi Arabia requires for Hajj and Umrah - and the vaccine for the African meningitis belt in the dry season.

    Full course £80

  • Diphtheria, tetanus and polio

    Revaxis

Three diseases, one injection, ten years - and the booster most British travellers turn out to be overdue for without knowing it.

    Full course £50

  • Traveller's diarrhoea

The most likely thing to go wrong on your trip, by a wide margin - and the one you can pack for in advance rather than hunt for a pharmacy abroad.
